Who’s pulling our edges out?

Traction alopecia is most common in black women, and what is the number one cause of this type of alopecia? Tension, that's right! Someone is pulling out those edges, honey! And I don't think it's your man, girlfriend, they or whatever pronoun is preferred.

Let's talk about this! I believe that black women in the UK don't spend money on caring for themselves, especially when it comes to hair care. The goal is always to look good, look well, polished and presentable, but hardly to maintain themselves through any level of care.

I’ll give an example... Someone may prefer to buy 28-inch bundles of hair. They may buy Gucci’s. That's right, no typo. I said Gucci’s because you know they’ve got more than one. Eat at the best fine dining restaurants and do up insta soft life while never treating their hair, never going to the spa for a well-deserved massage, never seeking counselling for all the trauma they’ve gone through and never asking for help when in need.

We have been conditioned to put ourselves last whilst looking like we’re putting ourselves first.

What does this have to do with our edges?

Black women just don't see the value in hair care, and many don't understand the concept of caring for their hair professionally.

How can you visit aunties salon knowing she is ripping the hell out of edges?

Knowing the health of your hair is deteriorating with each visit to the salon and still book future appointments.

It actually breaks my heart to see young girls who have no clue of what to do with their hair, parents who choose the so-called easy route of relaxers to break down their child’s natural hair texture instead of learning how to manage it better and investing in products that work.

Our edges are going because we continue to do things that our hair doesn’t like, that nobody's hair likes! There is no other nationality of women who are losing their edges at such an alarming rate.

Your lace front will never replace the freedom of waking up in the morning knowing your wigs are optional and you haven’t been held captive to your wig. You can open your front door with confidence. How many of you have nearly missed your Amazon delivery because you couldn't find your wig to open the door with?

Don’t get me wrong; I love wigs, and I wear them myself. However, my crown has options.

Let me be honest with you all, by getting it done cheaper and not investing in real hair care, has cost you greatly. It has cost you the freedom of choice. Your options are now limited, and that, my friends, is not cheap.

Now we have to have hair transplants to fill in those edges, and again that ain’t cheap. This may sound harsh, but as a hair carer, it frustrates me to hear people say that caring for their hair is too expensive when black people are the largest spenders on the planet correction in the freaking universe! You have money. You choose not to spend it on what matters, simple.

There are many different types of alopecia out there, but this one is for those with traction alopecia, which can be caused by being too cheap, going to unqualified hairdressers, using relaxers for your whole life, wearing wigs, tight braids, tight ponytails, getting your friend to do your hair, ignoring the signs of tension and still continuing to do what’s causing the problem year after, year after, year after!

At Morells, we will care and love on those edges and the rest of the strands on your head.

Homework for today

  • Don’t buy Gucci. Buy counselling! It’s time to heal. Know your worth, honey. No bag or shoe can replace the peace of mind of knowing you are doing the inner work to get yourself in the right space.

  • If something is not working, fix it! Ask for help, find out what you need and source the help. For example, that lump in your breast that has you concerned but you haven't booked an appointment with your doctor yet, well sis that needs to be done. Please do it now!!!

  • Last but not least start caring for your hair! You can visit us or find another salon that will care for your hair and sort out those edges once and for all.

It all starts with your crown.

Love from,

Morells haircare specialist
